MANDARIN VALLEY GOLD: THE EXPERIENCE OF MARCO VITELLI, A CITRUS GROWER FROM LUCANIA

Immagine
The video documents a technical visit to a very young Valley Gold mandarin orchard located in the countryside of Pisticci (Matera), through a direct discussion with the grower Marco Vitelli. The conversation focuses on the modern agronomic choices adopted since the design phase of the orchard, highlighting how accurate technical management is crucial to achieving superior productive and economic results. video During the interview, several structural aspects of the orchard are examined, starting with the high-density planting layout, designed to maximize production efficiency. A central role is attributed to the creation of the double sloped raised bed, a solution that improves soil management, promotes drainage and root oxygenation, and optimizes the distribution of water and nutrients. Considerable attention is given to the irrigation system, based on a double drip line, which will later be buried a few centimeters to increase protection and durability. This choice allows m...

Po...

Transformation of a Traditional Olive Grove into the Free-Vase ZaragoZa® System: The Case of Decimomannu (Sardinia)

Immagine
We are in Decimomannu, in the province of Cagliari, within a traditional olive grove undergoing a radical and practical transformation based on the free-vase ZaragoZa® system, promoted by agronomist Dr. Vito Vitelli. This intervention arises from the need to overcome the structural limitations of historical low-density plantations, typically characterized by excessive woody biomass and limited productive efficiency. The original planting layout consisted of a 6 × 5 meter spacing, a variation of the classic 6 × 6, with fewer than 300 trees per hectare. Under these conditions, light interception is suboptimal, and a significant portion of the plant’s energy is diverted toward maintaining unproductive wood. Hence the decision to implement a decisive, uncompromising intervention. The first step involved the reform pruning of mature trees. Cuts were made at a height of approximately 100–110 cm from the collar, at a 45° angle, following the main vertical axes of the plant. This drastic i...

Biancolilla in High Hills: Early Balance and Productivity with the Zaragoza System

Immagine
In Caltabellotta, in the province of Agrigento, at elevations exceeding 700–800 meters, a young olive grove composed almost entirely of the Biancolilla variety stands as a concrete example of modern olive cultivation in hilly, rainfed conditions. The technical framework, developed by Agronomist Vito Vitelli, follows the principles of the Zaragoza free vase system, with the aim of establishing efficient, well balanced, and early bearing trees. Two years after planting, the trees display a well defined trunk of 70–80 cm, still protected, along with a structure already rich in branching. This result has been achieved through two topping and edging interventions, sufficient to stimulate widespread and orderly multi branching. The vegetative response is evident, yet what is most striking is the strong predisposition to flowering already at this early stage. In a rainfed system, the presence of flowers and subsequent fruit set plays a strategic role. Fruiting becomes a natural mechanism ...

From “Forest” to a Productive System: The Experience of Reforming an Olive Grove in Sant’Arcangelo, Basilicata

Immagine
In Sant’Arcangelo (Potenza), agronomist Dr. Vito Vitelli addressed a representative case of traditional olive cultivation: trees exceeding 10–15 meters in height, characterized by a strong predominance of woody mass and production limited to the upper canopy. Such a system is no longer sustainable, either technically or economically. Olive grove “Foresta” before the reform A clear and decisive approach was adopted: reform pruning. The trees were topped at 110–130 cm, with cuts made at a 45° angle to ensure proper water runoff and to stimulate a well organized vegetative response. This marked the beginning of a new phase in tree structure development. Olive grove after the reform The regrowth was managed through 2 to 3 cycles of topping and edging, carried out progressively at 15–20 cm from the previous cut. Once this phase was completed, the tree was allowed to evolve into a bush like form (free vase Zaragoza), lower, more expanded, and more functional. Subsequent interventions wer...
