Pomegranate and Aphids: Creating an Unfavorable Environment Instead of Chasing the Insect
In Raffadali, in the province of Agrigento, at the Casalicchio farm, agronomist Dr. Vito Vitelli is conducting a highly interesting trial on alternative aphid management in pomegranate. The objective is not to continuously increase insecticide applications, but to modify the plant environment, making it unfavorable for the development of colonies. In the treated field, the difference is evident. Shoots and flower buds appear clean, dry, and with a very limited presence of aphids. The typical abundance of honeydew, which attracts ants and further promotes vegetation decline, disappears. According to Vitelli, everything begins with agronomic management. A well-balanced, well-lit, and properly aerated canopy naturally reduces the factors that predispose plants to infestations. Pruning, harmonious vegetation distribution, and vigor control therefore become fundamental elements of plant protection. The adopted strategy combines various products compatible with integrated or organic ag...
